Master Seminar in Innovation Management "Corporate Strategy and International Competition"

In this seminar we shed light on firm’s innovation and corporate strategy reactions to increasing international competition. The overall question is: how do German firms adjust and change their strategies in the face of increasing competition through Chinese companies. This seminar is embedded in the research project CHINNOCOM (https://innovation.uni-hohenheim.de/chinnocom).

In this seminar participants will experience case teaching as a new form of teaching. Participants (in teams) will pick a German firm for their analysis. They will collect (primary and) secondary data about a firm‘s reaction to increasing international competition. The data, most likely, will be qualitative data. This will provide firsthand insight about the drivers of strategic change, about the motivations, the hopes, and mental models of corporate decision makers. Based on the data students will write a short research paper and a (teaching) case study about the firm.

Structure:

  • The seminar starts with a kick-off session at the start of the semester and will wrap up with case-presentations at the end of the semester.
  • Some sessions of the seminar will be on campus, some coaching will be online. We expect participation of all students in all of the sessions.
  • Details will be provided in the kick-off session.
  • Students will work in teams of two, three or four (depending on the overall participation).
  • The seminar will be assessed based on the presentation and on the submitted paper.
  • Max number of participants: 16
  • The language of instruction is English. The data to be collected will also involve German language data. So, a German level of at least B2 is expected. You need to provide evidence for this.

Master Seminar in Innovation Management "Business & Innovation for Sufficiency"

Sufficiency means producing and consuming less in the face of limited natural resources. The aim of the sufficiency approach is to reduce the environmental impact caused by high resource consumption without compromising individual well-being. Innovations, such as new business models or goods, services, and processes, are a means to realize sufficiency, especially when sufficiency is implemented as a sustainability strategy at the firm level.

In this seminar, participants explore how firms implement sufficiency concepts and apply them to specific types of innovations. Participants will work with secondary data and analyze this data qualitatively. Specifically, in teams, students will investigate a set of firms from a given database based on their firm-specific product/service/project announcements according to sufficiency-oriented criteria. The results are compiled in the form of short descriptions and elaborated in a research paper.

Structure:

  • The seminar starts with a kick-off session at the start of the semester and will wrap up with (poster) presentations at the end of the semester.
  • Some sessions of the seminar will be on campus, some coaching will be online. We expect participation of all students in all of the sessions.
  • Details will be provided in the kick-off session.
  • Students will work in teams of twoor three (depending on the overall participation).
  • The seminar will be assessed based on the presentation and on the submitted paper.
  • Max number of participants: 15
  • The language of instruction is English.
